The Wasatch Front sees significant hailstorms every year — and most homeowners leave money on the table by filing claims without a roofing contractor's help. Here's the right way to do it.
Salt Lake City and the surrounding Wasatch Front communities experience dozens of hailstorms each year. Hail damage often isn't visible from the ground, but it can crack shingles, dent flashing, and cut the remaining life of your roof in half. Nationally, hail is one of the costliest sources of insured property losses every year according to the Insurance Information Institute. If your area was hit, the question isn't whether to file a claim — it's how to do it correctly.
Document the Storm
Note the date of the storm and any hail size reports from local news or the National Weather Service. This establishes the event in your claim file.
Photograph Visible Damage
Take photos of any obvious damage: dented gutters, cracked shingles, or debris. Do not climb on the roof yourself — leave that to your roofing contractor.
Call Summit Roofing for a Free Inspection
This is the most important step most homeowners skip. A licensed contractor can identify hail impact points that an adjuster might miss or undervalue. We provide a full photo report and damage documentation at no charge.
File Your Claim Promptly
Contact your insurance company to open a claim. Utah has a statute of limitations on storm damage claims — typically two years — but filing sooner means better documentation and less dispute.
Ask Us to Be There When the Roof Is Reviewed
If you'd like, we can be on-site to explain our roof photos, measurements and construction scope. To be clear about the line Utah draws: we document roofing facts, we don't adjust your claim. Under Utah Code §31A-26-201, adjusting is reserved for licensed adjusters — so any roofer who offers to negotiate or settle your claim is on the wrong side of that line.
Review the Scope Carefully
Compare the carrier's estimate against our construction scope. Where roofing line items look incomplete, we can document the roof conditions in more detail — product grade, ventilation, ice barrier, deck and flashing — so nothing about the roof itself goes unrecorded. What happens with the claim is your decision and your carrier's.
Select Your Contractor and Schedule Repairs
Choose a licensed, local contractor — not a door-to-door storm chaser. You can confirm any contractor's standing with Utah's DOPL license lookup tool before signing. One more red flag worth knowing: if a contractor offers to cover, waive or 'eat' your deductible, walk away. That's illegal in Utah under §13-50-302 and it exposes you, not just them. Summit Roofing is locally based in Salt Lake City and will be here if any warranty issues arise after the job.
